Writing
At Swallow Dell Primary School, our philosophy centres on ensuring that all children become fluent and confident writers, capable of effective communication. We understand that learning to write is a complex process that places significant demands on pupils’ working memory and executive functioning. Therefore, our curriculum is carefully structured to progressively build writing skills, with regular revisiting of prior learning to reinforce knowledge and abilities, all in alignment with the National Curriculum.
Our curriculum integrates writing into all English lessons, with longer writing pieces sometimes spanning two to three days to allow for thorough development. We recognise the strong connection between reading and writing, adopting a text-based approach where specific texts are allocated to year groups. These texts serve as vehicles for various writing opportunities, always linked to the learning objectives. This flexible approach ensures that the time spent on each text can vary, depending on the needs of the children and the complexity of the text.
Handwriting is taught discretely from Year 1 to Year 6, starting with fine motor skills and correct pencil grip in the Early Years, progressing to cursive writing by Year 2, and further developing consistency, legibility and fluency in Key Stage 2. Spelling is also a key focus, with structured programs like Little Wandle Letters and Sounds in the Early Years and KS1 ensuring continuity and progression. This comprehensive and thoughtful approach helps our students develop both foundational and advanced writing skills, fostering holistic development and enhancing overall literacy.
