Parent Information

Welcome to Swallow Dell Primary and Nursery School website, and thank you for your interest in our school. I hope this website will answer many of your questions about who we are and what we do. We would warmly welcome and encourage visits to the school.

Swallow Dell is a popular school in the heart of Welwyn Garden City. We aim to provide all children with a broad and balanced, high quality education so that they can achieve their full potential, be confident and become independent individuals.

We encourage children to work to achieve the highest standards of which they are capable across all aspects of the curriculum. We value the support of parents and carers. The staff and Governors are keen to work in partnership with you.

School Gateway

To be kept up to date with events, information and school closures (Snow Days) you need to be registered on our School Gateway service.  This service also allows you to pay for dinner money and trips. If you don’t have access to the internet but have a mobile phone you can still register, please contact the School Office for more details. Also if you have more than one child in our school, please register all your children and link them together.

Travelling to and from school

If pupils in Y5 or Y6 want to travel to and from school without adult supervision, please email us at admin@swallowdell.herts.sch.uk so that we have your consent to do this.

First aid and illness

All trained staff will administer first-aid and forms must be completed for all medication that you would like us to give in school. Parents/carers can complete medical forms at the school office if medication is to be issued in school.

If your child becomes ill during the school day you will be contacted either by a teacher or member of the school office.

During sunny weather please apply sunscreen to your child at home before coming to school.

Contact with school and the main school office

For all enquiries please call the office on 01707 339076 or send an email to admin@swallowdell.herts.sch.uk .

Uniform and PE kit

Pupils must wear the correct school uniform. Pre-owned uniform is available to buy from school at low prices. Please get in touch with us if you would like any more information about this. No leggings or jogging bottoms in Years 1-6 other than for PE.

PE kits must include a tracksuit or similar (leggings, jogging bottoms, hoodies) and trainers. Tracksuits or similar can be worn on cold days for PE outdoors, but only if they are plain and do not have any logo.

Please note that long hair should be tied up. No jewellery can be worn to school, though children with pierced ears may wear studs only, in order to comply with health and safety guidance, will only need to be covered or removed when children are doing physical activity such as PE. Watches can be worn by children, however smart watches (including FitBits or other sports watches) should not be worn at school.

Bags and what to bring to school

Infants (year 2 and below) should bring a school book bag to school. Children above year 2 can bring their own bags but these must be a reasonable size and fit in their lockers. Toys, fidget toys, football cards and other items that may be lost or broken should not be brought to school. Children should bring water bottles everyday (these should be named) and these should be taken home each day to be cleaned. All stationery will be provided and children do not need to bring a pencil case to school.

Lost property

Please label all articles of clothing, a great deal of time is spent trying to reunite items of clothing to their owner in school, but this is even more challenging if they have not been named.

Outdoor and sports equipment

Outdoor play equipment is timetabled for each class . All classes have a small amount of play equipment for their class to use at breaks and lunchtimes.

As always, if you have any questions about any of this information, please give us a call on 01707 339079 or email admin@swallowdell.herts.sch.uk where we will help you as much as possible.

Birthday Treats

We understand that children want to celebrate their birthdays and bring in treats to share with the friends. However, as we have children with allergies within the school we only allow
treats to be handed out at the end of the school day by the parents – this must take place off school premises in accordance with recent updates to schools from Hertfordshire County
Council.
